What's new in NEM-Watch v8

The upgrade to v8 took about a year of development time - hence you will understand that there are a great many enhancements that we've added into the package.

In the table below, we have tried to group these enhancements into a logical order, in order that you can clearly see what's on offer for you:

Models

Geographical Display

The map section that is the focal-point of NEM-Watch is now super-charged!

1)  We've moved onto the map the following data sets:
   (a)  Weather Measurements points, showing temperature by default;
   (b)  Dam Levels (not in Bronze) for hydro plant, and significant thermal cooling supplies.
If there are too many things on the map, by default, you can just turn them off!

2)  You can move, and resize, many of the elements on the map (price, demand, interconnector flow).  Just click the bottom-right corner, and drag.

3)  We've incorporated colour-coding of many elements on the display:
   (a)  Price boxes are colour-coded on a sliding scale (click on a box to see the min and max settings, which are adjustable);
   (b)  The regions themselves, and the demand boxes attached, are set on a sliding scale being expected demand range for the region (click on the box to see the min and max settings;
   (c)  Temperature is now also shown on a sliding scale (click on a city to see).

4)  We've also included on the map a box for each region summarising the current, 7-day rolling, Cumulative Price, as in this example for the price spike in SA on the 13th January 2009.

5)  We've included in some of the data boxes on the map, a direct link to a pop-up chart/data-box highlighting further relevant information:
   (a)  Click on the chart symbol on an interconnector chart for that interconnector, showing the flow, the import/export constraint, and price difference across the interconnector.
   (b)  Click on the chart symbol on a region's demand box and the "Supply/Demand Reference" chart will pop up, to provide a quick comparison of the current demand against the historical maximum, and also against NEMMCO's latest forecasts for the next summer and winter.
   (c)  Click on a City for it's current weather data, and drag it around the display to situate it as you like.
   (d)  Click on a Dam for it's current storage, and drag it around the display to situate it as you like.

3 Main Charts

Instead of a single main chart within NEM-Watch v7, we have included 3 main charts on the display (as follows):

1) The top chart highlights price history across all regions, and is selectable to show:
   (a)  Various ranges of history; and
   (b)  Either dispatch (5-min) or trading (30-min) data - with predispatch data shown for Silver and up.

2) The middle chart highlights Demand history across all regions, and is selectable to show:
   (a)  Various ranges of history; and
   (b)  Either dispatch (5-min) or trading (30-min) data- with predispatch data shown for Silver and up.
In addition, the whole-of-NEM demand is also shown on the same chart, but on a separate axis for completeness.

3) The top chart highlights history of Available Generation across all regions, and is selectable to show:
   (a)  Various ranges of history; and
   (b)  Either dispatch (5-min) or trading (30-min) data- with predispatch data shown for Silver and up.
In addition, the whole-of-NEM available generation is also shown on the same chart, but on a separate axis for completeness.

Layers

To make the FCAS information clearer than in v7, each commodity has its own layer!

You are also able to select to show either dispatch (5-min) data or trading (30-min) data on the display.

Local Alarms

With v8, we have augmented, and streamlined, the capability of the Local Alarms functionality within the application.

First step is defining your Alarm Criteria (i.e. the rule to check each time data is updated).  For Silver Models and up, you are able to Combine Rules (e.g. say if the price in NSW is >$100/MWh and the demand in NSW is > 13,000MW)

Second step is defining your Alarm Action (i.e. what you want to have happen, if the criteria is met).  With v8, you have more actions you can choose from - for instance, you can have NEM-Watch send a small pop-up "Toast" to the bottom-right corner of the display.  For Gold Models and up, you are able to have NEM-Watch trigger an external process (*.exe) if your criteria is met

Economic Islands

With v8, we've also introduced the concept of Economic Islands to clarify what the local supply/demand situation is, when a region (or groups of regions) are commercially separated from the rest of the NEM because of constrained interconnector flow.

The Map of the NEM is modified, in real-time, (by red borders) to indicate the current groupings of Economic Islands around the NEM.

At the same time, we also calculate the Instantaneous Reserve Plant Margin (IRPM) for each Economic Island, by treating constrained flow as static, and exports adding to demand in the exporting region.  The indicators are highlighted when the IRPM trends lower.

We've done this to follow from some assessment we conducted following summer 2007-08, which revealed the significance of Economic Islands.

SMS Alarms

With v8, the SMS Alarms are now available within the Platinum Model.

Your SMS alarms are set up remotely to your copy of NEM-Watch (so they are checked, even when your copy of NEM-Watch is not running) to keep you informed of important developments in the market.

Your Platinum Model allows you to send SMS Alerts to multiple mobile numbers - hence you probably won't need more than one copy!

Publish NEM-Watch clarity on your intranet

With v8, the Publisher Model incorporates all the additional benefits provided through the increased clarity of information provided through the many enhancements we've made (some outlined above).

Use this model to share the benefits of the clear view of the NEM provided by NEM-Watch across all those in your organisation who can access your corporate intranet.  A very cost-effective solution for large organisations!
